THE ROLE OF SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS IN THE CRITICAL CARE SETTING
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1.
Understand the role of speech pathologists in the critical care setting
2.
Orient to the ICU setting for safe practice
3.
Identify factors that my negatively impact swallowing, cognition, and
communication of critically ill patients
4.
Identify predictors and clinical decision making to help manage ICU
patients and project their course
5.
Understand Indications for and timing of instrumental swallow studies in
the ICU setting
6.
Understand how to perform and interpret instrumental swallow studies
This course will provide a comprehensive overview
of the Intensive Care Unit setting.
Information on equipment typically encountered in the ICU will be explained. Foundational principles will be presented
which will enhance the clinician's knowledge base for practicing in an ICU
setting. Critical elements to assist in
clinical decision making will be trained.
Skills and understanding will be facilitated through lecture, case
studies, and videos. Case studies will
be presented with interactive decision making to help synthesize and apply
course information. Instruction will include
review and analysis of topics including Intensive Care Unit orientation, lines
and tubes, drains, and pulmonary interventions. Analysis of instrumental
swallow studies, report writing, and ICU skills training and competency will be
discussed.

Speech
Language Pathologist
Genevieve McKeon received her M.S. in Speech Language Pathology from
Genevieve McKeon received her M.S. in Speech Language Pathology from
University of South Florida in 1999. She has been
practicing at Johns Hopkins
Bayview Medical Center for 14 years. Her clinical practice
and primary
research areas of interests include diagnosis and
management of swallowing
and communication disorders related to complex
conditions including neuromuscular and burn injury.
She has presented nationally and internationally
on a range of topics including language recovery after
stroke, management of dysphagia in myositis, burn
injury, and neurologic injury. She is the primary
speech pathologist on the Johns Hopkins Bayview
Neuromuscular team.
